90 – noventa
91 – noventa y uno
92 – noventa y dos
93 – noventa y tres
94 – noventa y cuatro
95 – noventa y cinco
96 – noventa y seis
97 – noventa y siete
98 – noventa y ocho
99 – noventa y nueve
100 – cien

It’s also important to note that in Spanish, the word “cien” (100) is used to mean “100,” rather than the word “ciento,” which is used as a placeholder before hundreds and thousands (e.g. “doscientos” for 200, “trescientos mil” for 300,000).

With practice and repetition, you’ll soon master the numbers 11-100 in Spanish and be able to use them with confidence in your speaking and writing.

The Hundreds and Beyond: Numbers in the Thousands

In Spanish, numbers in the thousands are formed by using the word “mil” (thousand) followed by the number. For example, “dos mil” (two thousand). To express numbers larger than one thousand, you can simply add a number before “mil.” For example:

  • tres mil doscientos” (three thousand two hundred)

You can also use the word “miles” (thousands) to express a larger number. For example:

  • cinco miles” (five thousands)

It’s also common to see numbers written with a period to indicate thousands, and a comma to indicate decimal places. For example, “1.000,5” (one thousand and five hundredths).
Here are a couple of examples:

  • mil novecientos noventa y nueve” (1999)
  • dos mil trescientos cuarenta y cinco” (2345)
  • tres mil quinientos setenta y ocho” (3578)
  • cuatro mil novecientos veintiuno” (4921)
  • cinco mil setecientos sesenta y dos” (5762)
  • seis mil novecientos cuarenta y tres” (6943)
  • siete mil cien” (7100)
  • ocho mil doscientos cincuenta y siete” (8257)
  • nueve mil novecientos noventa y nueve” (9999)

As you can see, there are a few different ways to express numbers in the thousands and beyond in Spanish.

Ordinal Numbers in Spanish

In Spanish, ordinal numbers are used to indicate the order or position of something in a list or sequence. For example, “first,” “second,” “third,” etc. The most common ordinal numbers in Spanish are:

  • primero/a” (first)
  • segundo/a” (second)
  • tercero/a” (third)
  • cuarto/a” (fourth)
  • quinto/a” (fifth)

To form ordinal numbers beyond the fifth place, you simply add the ending -ésimo/a to the corresponding cardinal number. For example:

  • séptimo/a” (seventh)
  • octavo/a” (eighth)
  • noveno/a” (ninth)

It’s important to remember that ordinal numbers in Spanish agree in gender with the noun they modify. For example:

  • el tercer coche” (the third car)
  • la tercera camisa” (the third shirt)

Using ordinal numbers in Spanish is a useful skill for giving and following instructions, making lists, and discussing dates and schedules.

Fractional Numbers in Spanish

Fractional numbers in Spanish are used to express parts of a whole. The most common way to express fractions in Spanish is to use the word “parte” or “partes” followed by a cardinal number. For example:

  • Una parte de uno: One part of one (1/1)
  • Media taza de leche: Half a cup of milk (1/2)
  • Una tercera parte de un kilo: One third of a kilogram (1/3)
  • Cuatro quintos de un litro: Four fifths of a liter (4/5)

It’s also possible to express fractions using the word “sobre,” which means “over.” For example:

  • Tres sobre cuatro: Three over four (3/4)
  • Cinco sobre nueve: Five over nine (5/9)

It’s important to note that when expressing fractions in Spanish, the numerator (the number on top) always comes before the denominator (the number on the bottom).

In conclusion, learning numbers in Spanish is an important step in your journey as a Spanish learner. Whether you’re using numbers to express quantities, dates, or measurements, it’s crucial to have a solid understanding of the basics. By practicing the numbers 1-10, 11-100, and beyond, as well as ordinal and fractional numbers, you can improve your fluency and accuracy when speaking and writing in Spanish.

Common mistakes to avoid when ordering food in Spanish

As a language teacher, one of the most common mistakes I see my students make when ordering food in Spanish is not using proper pronunciation and grammar. Here are a few tips to help you avoid these mistakes:

  1. Pay attention to verb conjugation. Make sure to use the correct form of the verb “ordenar” (to order) when making your request. For example, you would use “quisiera ordenar” (I would like to order) rather than “quiero ordenar” (I want to order).
  2. Practice your accent. Pronunciation can be tricky in any language, and it’s especially important to get it right when ordering food. Pay attention to the way words are pronounced in Spanish and practice saying them out loud to get a feel for the rhythm and flow of the language.
  3. Use proper word order. In Spanish, the verb typically comes before the subject and object, so make sure to word your request correctly. For example, you would say “Quisiera una ensalada” (I would like a salad) rather than “Una ensalada quisiera.”
  4. Know the numbers. It’s important to be able to count in Spanish when ordering food, especially if you want to order a specific number of items or specify how much of something you want. Make sure to practice your numbers before heading to a restaurant.
  5. Use proper nouns and adjectives. Make sure to use the correct form of nouns and adjectives when describing your order. For example, you would say “un bistec de ternera” (a veal steak) rather than “un ternera bistec” (a veal steak).

By following these tips, you’ll be able to order food in Spanish with confidence and accuracy!

Join me today as I dive into the fascinating world of ‘despedidas’ (goodbyes)!

I have made a short video about this topic.

The 6 Most Useful Goodbyes In Spanish

Hasta luego – See you later

Hasta luego is an expression used in Spanish, typically meaning “until later” or “see you later.” It’s often compared to the English phrases “see you soon” or “until we meet again”.
It’s commonly used among family and friends to say goodbye for a short amount of time.

Hasta pronto – See you soon

Hasta pronto is used to say goodbye. It is considered to be a more informal version of the standard “adios”. Essentially, it means “see you soon” and implies a desire to meet the person again at some point in the near future.

Hasta mañana – See you tomorrow

Hasta mañana can be translated from Spanish to English as ‘see you tomorrow’ and it is commonly used as a farewell to someone you will be seeing the following day.

Adiós – Goodbye

‘Adiós’ is one of the most universally-recognized Spanish phrases, but it can mean several things depending on the context. Literally translated as “to God,” adiós is a way to say goodbye in the same way you may use “farewell” in English.

Chao – See you later (informal)

The Spanish word chao is commonly used both as a greeting and as a farewell. Depending on how it is used, the meaning of chao can range from an energetic hello to an emotional goodbye. The term also conveys familiarity and friendship, making it more than just your stereotypical salutation.

Nos vemos – Until we meet again

Nos vemos is a Spanish phrase that translates to “see you” or “until we meet again”. It is commonly used as an informal way to say goodbye and expresses the idea of looking forward to seeing someone again soon. It’s often used among friends or family when saying farewell.
Among strangers or those who are less familiar with each other it is not appropriate to use nos vemos as a final parting phrase, but rather opt for a more formal version such as ‘hasta luego’.

Buenas noches Good evening

Buenas noches is the Spanish phrase for “good evening.” It is a greeting used when you enter a place in the late afternoon or evening, such as a restaurant.
The phrase itself comes from a combination of two words: bueno, which means good, and noche, which means night. It often marks the end of dinner parties or other social gatherings, or to say goodnight before sending off guests for the night.

Buenas  Hi

Buenas translates to “hello” or “good” in English. Its usage can be somewhat versatile, depending on the context; while it can be more formal when written, when uttered as a greeting it becomes more conversational and upbeat.
